In building design, it is often necessary to estimate the useful life of mechanical system components be produced. For instance, one would like to know which components will need to be replaced over the useful life, say 40 years, of an ordinary building. Paramount in this life estimate is the life limitation brought on by the fatigue in a rotating or reciprocating system, e.g. bearings, shafts, seals and pumps.
